In-Town, Travel and HS Barker Season 2021-2022

After a successful summer season we are now planning our 2021-2022 travel, in-town and High School Barker seasons.  Hingham Public School gymnasiums are once again available to us for practices and games.

Registration Open:  After a COVID forced hiatus last year, John Baker In-Town Basketball for 1st - 8th grades is back for the 2021-2022 season!!  This will be the same as years past with teams of approximately 10 players, equal playing time across the board and all games held locally in Hingham on Saturdays.  We are shooting for a 12/4 start with no games on 12/25, 1/1 or 2/19.   We do not have exact times and locations for each grade yet but will release that info ASAP.  The season will run through 3/12.

We are also working on bringing our popular Sunday Skills and Drills sessions back, hosted by ASA and RAB.  This year we hope to hold these sessions on Sunday afternoons between 12:00-3:00pm.  More information to come as things firm up.

Travel Basketball will be open to 3rd - 8th grade boys.  We will again be playing in the South Shore Youth Basketball League as well as the Starland Winter League.  Games will be held across the South Shore as well as at Starland.

Tryouts will be held at Starland again this year on the following dates and times:

Monday October 18th:

4:00 - 7th grade and 4th grade

5:00 - 5th grade and 3rd grade

6:00 - 8th grade and 6th grade

Wednesday October 20th:

4:30 to 6:00 - 8th grade

Monday October 25th:

4:00 - 3rd grade

5:00 - 7th grade and 4th grade

6:00 - 6th grade and 5th grade

Please note that to be considered for A team placement you must attend at least one of the two tryouts.  We strongly encourage attendance at both tryouts so coaches can get the best look possible.

If you plan on ONLY playing town basketball please select the "Town Only" option at checkout.

If you plan on playing travel AND town please select the "Travel and Town" option when checking out.  Please be sure you are registered for travel tryouts before you register for the travel season.

If you plan on playing HIGH SCHOOL BARKER please choose the high school option at checkout and be ready to put your team name in which you will need to come up with before registering.

Barker In-Town Basketball Guide

Dear Parents and Players,

See below for some answers to questions you may have.

  • Hingham youth basketball program for boys in grades 1-8.
  • Program emphasis is on skill development, sportsmanship and fun.

  • All players will be placed on a team.  There are no cuts.  There is however a total enrollment limit for each grade required because of constraints on gym time, number of teams, etc.  So be sure to register early.
  • Teams are formed by grade through a player draft.  The draft is conducted by all the coaches in the league together, under the oversight of the grade coordinator.
  • No requests to place a particular player on a particular team will be honored independent of the draft process.

  • Games are played every Saturday between December 4 and March 19, with the exceptions of Dec 25, Jan 1, Jan 16 and Feb 19.
  • Each grade will have the same blocks of time in the same gyms around town every Saturday.  Within that block, your game time will vary.  Gyms used are HHS, HMS, East School, South School and Derby Academy

  • We will again be hosting Sunday Skills and Drills with ASA at Derby Academy in lieu of practices.  This is open to all town and travel players and is a fee one hour clinic held weekly during the season.
  • Grades 1/2/3 have a combined practice and game on Saturdays

  • Playing time in Barker is allocated equally to all players.  Each coach is given a chart directing substitution patterns by quarter based on the number of players on his bench.  This is policed rigorously.

  • Participation in the In-Town Barker Program for the season is $150 for the first player registered per family, $125 for the second player and $100 per player after that.  The discount does not apply to the High School Barker program.
  • Scholarships are available.  Please contact the Barker In-Town coordinator, or your grade coordinator for more information.
